The island has been continuously inhabited by the British since the Sea Venture, captained by George Somers, was shipwrecked here in 1609, the inspiration for Shakespeare's play The Tempest. Hamilton is the capital and heart of the island. Excellent shopping and dining venues can be found right on Front Street, opposite the pier. Among the attractions not to miss are: Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo (BAMZ), all conveniently located in a complex on North Shore Road; St. Peter's Church, believed to be the oldest Anglican church in the Western hemisphere, and stunning in its simplicity with its rough-hewn pillars, exposed cedar beams and candlelit chandeliers; and St. Catherine Fort, well-preserved and a great vantage point for photos.

Lisbon is Portugal’s hilly, coastal capital city. From the imposing São Jorge Castle, the view encompasses the old city’s pastel-colored buildings, Tagus Estuary, and Ponte 25 de Abril suspension bridge. Nearby, the National Azulejo Museum displays 5 centuries of decorative ceramic tiles. Just outside Lisbon is a string of Atlantic beaches, from Cascais to Estoril.
Faial Island's capital, Horta, is a regular meeting point for yachts and other vessels crossing the Atlantic, having played host to streams of caravels, clippers, and catamarans over the centuries. It is also a popular departure point for deep-sea fishing trips, dolphin- and whale-watching excursions, and scuba-diving activities. Horta's museum displays antique furniture, portraits, nautical memorable, is, and photographs of the island's busy harbor. The SScrimshawMuseum above the famous Peter's Café Sport exhibits engraved whales' bones and teeth dating back to 1884. 15 km from Horta is the Caldeira Cabeço Gordo, a vast green 400-meter-deep volcanic crater in the center of the island. Faial's other spectacular natural sight is the Vulcão dos Capelinhos, where volcanic activity in 1957 extended the island on the west side, smothering a lighthouse that can now be seen buried in ash.
Hamilton is the capital city of Bermuda, a British island territory in the North Atlantic. Along the harbour, Front Street features pastel-coloured colonial buildings and high-end shops. The stone Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity has a tower with city views. The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute offers ocean discovery exhibits. Northeast is the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum, and Zoo, home to sharks and turtles.
In the 1970's Norwegian Cruise Lines developed Great Stirrup Cay as the industry's first private island playground. Needless to say, the idea took off. All major Caribbean cruise lines now offer stops at their Bahamian island for an afternoon of hassle-free surf and sand. In fact, from Great Stirrup Cay, you can sometimes see a Royal Caribbean ship anchored off nearby CocoCay, formerly Little Stirrup Cay. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. If you were to sit down and design your private island, it would probably look a lot like this one. Except for your fantastic private mansion, Great Stirrup Cay lacks very little in the way of amenities and activities. The beach, of course, is the main attraction, offering swimming, snorkeling (coral reefs surround the island), rafts, paddleboats, catamarans, and kayaks. For the less-wet set, there are volleyball courts and hiking trails. Set out and try to find the island's lighthouse. Appetites are readily appeased at the beach barbeque and the thirsty can head for the beach bar (the only building on the island with walls - save for the bathrooms, of course). Music arrives courtesy of a calypso band so you can limber up with a limbo contest - then limp off to a waiting, palm-shaded hammock.
