Cork's history began in the 7th century with the founding of a monastery by St. Finbarr on a small alluvial island in the River Lee. The monastery and the settlement were later incorporated in the fortified base the Danes developed there. As a result of war and destruction throughout the following centuries, Cork has no medieval buildings left but boasts a few remains from the 18th century. The central area takes its architectural character from the early 19th century.

Dunkerque started life in the 8th century as a simple fishing harbour. It became famous as a haven for pirates who preyed on shipping in the North Sea - the most celebrated being the local hero, Jean Bart. Today's the dunes of Dunkerque make it a seaside resort. The city is remarkably green for a major international port and industrial centre, handling bulk cargoes from all over the world, as well as being a ferry port for cars and freight with many lorries crossing between the UK and Europe. You can still discover much of Dunkerque's colourful past on a visit to the town. In the 17th century, Dunkerque was the base for French "pirates" who successfully attacked other countries' ships in the North Sea. The most famous was Jean Bart - who, like the English hero Sir Francis Drake, is said to be "not a pirate". Both were "privateers", with their monarch's written permission to attack other countries' ships, as well as the use of royal ships and harbours. Dunkerque was also an important fishing port - a past celebrated in the annual two-month-long carnival, featuring weekly parades by the town "giants".In Britain many people first associate "Dunkirk" (the English spelling) with the famous evacuation of British, French and Allied troops in 1940. The German forces had swept through Belgium into northern France, cutting off the retreating Allied armies in this corner of France. Some could be evacuated by ships that braved the German air offensive to enter Dunkerque harbour. The only hope for thousands of other troops was to wait in the dunes and on the flat sandy beaches along this coast. Many unarmed small boats and ships crossed the Channel in an amazing bid to rescue them - in what Churchill dubbed "the miracle of Dunkirk." Constantly revisited by heavy fighting, the town of Dunkerque was 80% destroyed during the Second World War. Its rebuilding in the 'fifties left a legacy of contemporary post-war 'fifties architecture that is slowly coming to be appreciated. Fortunately, some interesting reminders of Dunkerque's colourful past can still be seen. Since the last war, the port has greatly expanded along with new industries such as oil refining, chemicals, and steel-making that use the port to bring in raw materials. The steelworks and shipbuilding yards, once big industries here, closed in the 1980s. Dunkerque has an international reputation for its efforts to protect the environment whilst finding new jobs: landscaping separates industry from residential areas, and there are notable "green" initiatives, like the "wind farm" on the harbour wall. The old dockside quays, now too small for today's ocean-going supertankers are being redeveloped as a characterful and elegant cultural and tourist area, centring around the Port Museum and the Université du Littoral.
Visiting Honfleur means, traveling through history in the heart of an exceptionally preserved site. Our old maritime city is very well known for its old dock but we are inviting you to experiment with its particular atmosphere walking through its old narrow paved streets. Honfleur is certainly proud of its prestigious past but the city is also definitely turned toward the future. It is a dynamic harbor offering an increasing number of cultural activities: exhibitions, concerts, and traditional feasts such as the Shrimp Feast or the Russian Film Festival. Take the time to discover Honfleur.
St Peter Port, Guernsey's main town, is built into a steep valley leading down to the harbor, with spectacular views across Tlderney and the other islands. It has the most sheltered anchorage in the Channel Island and it has been a haven and eventually a harbour for over 2000 years. St Peter Port has been rated amongst the 50 most historic towns in England and Wales. Despite the predominance of international banks based here, the town has managed to retain its 17th-century charm. The granite buildings now occupied by shops were once the homes of the town's wealthy residents and the High Street still has its original cobbles. The town was put on the map in 1855 when Victor Hugo, exiled from France, made his home at Hauteville House. Here he wrote Les Miserables. Renoir also painted a number of his masterpieces here.Several guided walking tours of St Peter Port begin at the Tourist Information Bureau during the summer months.
Cork City is Ireland's third city (after Dublin and Belfast) and has always been an important seaport. It began on an island in the swampy estuary of the River Lee (the name Corcaigh means a marsh) and gradually climbed up the steep banks on either side. Today the river flows through Cork city in two main channels, so that you find yourself constantly crossing bridges. Some of the main streets are built over channels where ships nuzzled their anchor chains a century ago. Along the South Mall, you will see large gateways at street level, under steps leading to a higher main door. These were once boathouses when merchants arrived at their warehouses by water. As the hilly streets go up and down, so do the voices of the citizens. They have a characteristic sing-song cadence, beloved by national comedians, and Corkonians are regarded as the most talkative of all the Irish. St. Finbarr is the founder and patron saint. He founded a monastery in the seventh century where St. Finn Barre's Cathedral now stands, and it grew into an extensive and wealthy establishment. It attracted the attention of the Viking sea pirates who raided and burned the infant city but returned in later years to settle and trade. The Anglo-Norman invasion in 1172 resulted in both the Danish lords and local McCarthy chiefs having to submit to Henry II, but Cork has always had a reputation for independence and stubborn resistance: it came to be known as "Rebel Cork".
Waterford is the oldest city in Ireland. A walled city of Viking origins, it retains much of its medieval character together with the graceful buildings from its 118th-century expansion. The parameters of the 10th-century settlement can be identified in The Viking Triangle. Reginald's Tower is the most historic urban medieval monument in Ireland. The elegant Chamber of Commerce building, the City Hall, and the Bishop's Palace are prime examples of beautiful 18th-century architecture.Waterford is the home of Waterford Crystal, the world-famous hand-crafted, cut glass product, and is a sophisticated shopping venue for high fashion and craft & design centers.Ecclesiastical landmarks include St. Patrick's Churches, Black Friars, St. Olave's Church, and Greyfriars. The Church Of Ireland Christ Church Cathedral and the Catholic Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity were both designed by Waterford architect John Roberts (1714 - 1796).Waterford Treasures at the Granary is both a treasury of gold, bronze, silver, crystal, and historical documents and a treasure trail that takes you through 1000 years of Ireland's oldest city. Waterford has a long theatrical and musical tradition, which centers on the historic Theatre Royal, which hosts the Waterford International Festival of Light Opera each year. The Garter Lane Arts Centre is home to the local Red Kettle Theatre Company, other visiting groups, and art exhibitions. The "Large Room" in City Hall is the venue for the popular Waterford Show. The Forum Theatre is another theatrical venue in thecity.
