    Experience San Diego

About 120 miles south of Los Angeles lies San Diego County which is not only home to its namesake City of San Diego (which is the 8th largest city in the U.S.), it is also the birthplace of California. Even though San Diego is a vibrant metropolis, it is a melting pot destination that is perfect for all types of vacationers. Whether you’re young or young at heart, you’ll find that San Diego is a place filled with a bounty of activities, restaurants and cultural offerings.

One of the beautiful beaches you can enjoy in San Diego, California.

      The Beaches

One thing that San Diego doesn’t lack is a vast coastline that welcomes exploration. Its 17-mile-long coastline with 24 individual beaches provides ample opportunities to experience San Diego to the hilt. The beaches of this region are lauded as some of the best in the United States and each one is vastly different. From the surfing mecca of Swami’s Beach to the serenity of Cardiff State Beach, San Diego has something for everyone to enjoy! Paddle boarding, kitesurfing, hydroflying, and hover boarding are all faves for both locals and visitors alike. And you can also enjoy diving throughout shipwrecks and kelp forests.

If you tend to enjoy a beach experience without going into the water, you can peruse its many of the natural offerings as well as strolling down boardwalks - and travelers via the biking paths. And something the kiddies will particularly appreciate - tidepools. Several beaches throughout San Diego offer this experience which will help your little ones learn about and get hands-on with many sea creatures, including sea anemones, barnacles, starfish and more. Regardless of whichever activity you choose to pursue at the beach, please be sure to wear sunblock.

        Fishing

San Diego proudly bills itself as an “Angler’s Paradise” as it is one of the top fishing destinations in America – and they can certainly back up that claim! During the winter, the coast of San Diego is home to all types of fish, including yellowtail, bluefin, and mahi-mahi, as well as halibut, sheepshead, and white sea bass. And since San Diego has 20 lakes and reservoirs, you may want to experience freshwater fishing, since trout, catfish, sturgeon, etc. are all in abundance. You can also experience pier fishing at 7 of San Diego’s ocean piers where sand bass, spotted bay bass, halibut, barracuda, etc. can be found.

One note: Fishing licenses are required by individuals aged 17 years old+. However, fishing from a public pier in San Diego doesn’t require a license.

Electric bikes are a great way to see the city!

          Touring San Diego

Meandering throughout San Diego is a ton of fun and there are numerous ways for you to experience this amazing place. Whether it is a coastal bike path where you can observe sea lions, harbor seals, and indigenous flora and fauna, as well as surfers, or taking a guided tour of the most iconic neighborhoods and landmarks in the region, you will gain great knowledge of the stories which give San Diego its unique character.

San Diego is known for having a wide variety of cuisine and spirits.

              Food & Drink

Staying true to its Mexican heritage, it’s only fitting that San Diego is known for its wide variety of Mexican-inspired restaurants. However, San Diego is also known for its global gastronomic offerings in many of its neighborhoods. From Thai to Indian and every cuisine in between, San Diego will not disappoint, even for the most discerning palate. When visiting, you should experience California cuisine, which is dedicated to the farm-to-table culinary practices – as well as Baja Med cuisine (which is a fusion of traditional Mexican ingredients along with those of the Mediterranean). And if you’re a beer drinker, you will be happy to know that San Diego has a highly lauded craft beer scene that you can experience firsthand at one (or more) of the 140+ breweries. By the way, be sure to sample the local wine coming from smaller outlets; Pinot Noir has become quite the popular varietal.

As you can see, San Diego has quite a bit to offer. It is truly a vacation destination which you and your entire family should consider (perhaps for a family reunion). It is also a place that is welcoming to both the single traveler and honeymooners. I’m certain that you will be inspired to expeditiously secure your San Diego getaway with Costco Travel!
