A Friends Trip to Cancun
An annual winter vacation isn’t typical for me so something in the travel stars must have aligned this year when three friends and I pulled together a girls' trip to Cancun. Before leaving home we each had COVID tests and were negative. While the test wasn’t required for entry to Mexico, we all agreed that testing was the best start to the journey. So with sandals, suits and sunscreen packed, we set off on Alaska Airlines, non-stop from Seattle to Cancun for seven (hopefully) sun-filled days at an all-inclusive resort.
The main pools at Live Aqua. Aaaaah.
Our Resort
The key to a great all-inclusive resort is picking the one that meets your needs. For us, Live Aqua Cancun fit the bill. This is an adults-only property that’s located right on the beach in the hotel zone. Views from the resort are spectacular with miles of soft-sand beach and the Caribbean-blue water is oh so gorgeous.
With many dining options, you won't go hungry here! I think our favorite restaurant at the resort was MB. The habanero soup is a must-order, it’s spicy but not super-hot. We also enjoyed Varenna, serving Italian lunch and dinner. Hidden Garden takes the win for ambiance and offers an Asian-inspired menu. Their fish dish, simply called Mango, garnered this restaurant a return visit for our final night at the resort. Breakfast is served buffet-style on small individually prepared plates, egg dishes are cooked to order at the omelet station, or you can order from a menu at your table. Room-service here is offered 24-hours a day and I experienced lightning-fast service.
Cheers Amigas!

Whether you imbibe in the spirits or you’re an ice-tea-teetotaler, a refreshing libation is only a staff member away at Live Aqua. If you do go the cocktail route, the drinks will not be as strong as the ones served at your favorite bar back home. However, if you like your drinks stronger, just ask and they are happy to accommodate your request.
We enjoy wine and were surprisingly pleased with the house wines they poured. There’s also a wine menu if you wish to order wine by the bottle (an extra cost). One evening we purchased a Valle de Guadalupe region wine and were so pleased with the choice that we found a nearby shop and bought a couple of bottles to bring home.

The Side Trip and Other Mentions
In the middle of our week, we traveled by ferry to Isla Mujeres. This small gem of an island has lovely beaches in the north and a dramatic rocky coastline to the south. Golf cart rentals are common transportation for day-trippers and you can drive the entire island. The main town was a bit too crowded for social distancing so we stayed more to the open areas. We visited a turtle farm that safeguards an ancient breeding ground and protects the turtle eggs. We stopped for lunch at a Jamaican restaurant (run by a Canadian) for fish tacos. There are shops for souvenirs and an ice cream shop or two along the road. We noticed people ziplining and I hear snorkeling is popular there too.
While our day trip to Isla Mujeres was not part of the all-inclusive, it was well worth the extra cost. Back at the resort we didn't use the indoor spa, however we did book foot massages that were given poolside which was a real treat. This is also at an additional cost, but spa treatments are usually always an extra cost at all-inclusive resorts.
At the time we traveled, the resort offered complimentary COVID testing prior to our return home. The test was administered at the resort and results were delivered via email in a matter of hours. Proof of a negative COVID test was required for return to the U.S. at that time.
A final word about what truly makes a great resort stay… the staff. The men and women at Live Aqua Cancun were among the best all-inclusive staff I’ve experienced. They were friendly and genuine to us. They shared stories about their families, pets, and dreams for the future… and asked us about our lives and experiences. They worked hard morning to night to give us a week of rest, enjoyment and a much needed break. I can’t mention everyone that waited on us for fear I’d forget someone, but we were all thankful for their attentive service. Gracias por todo!
