6 Quick Tips to Get You Started on Planning Your Honeymoon
One question we get all the time is “I’m planning our honeymoon, where do I start?” Here are some quick tips to help you plan a memorable and exciting getaway. Relax, and have fun with it! Planning ahead will ensure you enjoy this bonding time after all those hectic months of making wedding plans.
1. Plan Early
Don’t wait until a month before the wedding to start planning your honeymoon. Planning takes time; once the wedding date is set, the honeymoon plans can begin. You’ll want all of the details wrapped up so when the ceremony is over, you can focus on packing your suitcase.
2. Choose a Departure Date
Choosing a departure date is truly your choice. If you’re planning on leaving for your honeymoon the same day as your wedding, be sure to plan enough time to say goodbye to your guests, change, grab your suitcases and get to the airport with plenty of time to make your flight. Airlines recommend passengers be at the airport two hours before departure for domestic flights and at least three hours before departure for international flights. Some people will give themselves a few days between the wedding and honeymoon and some will delay their honeymoon for a more ideal time of year to travel.
3. Choose your Experience
There are so many options when it comes to honeymoons it can be overwhelming. Start by making a list of things you want from your honeymoon to help you narrow down the options.
Cruises offer the ability to unpack once while traveling to multiple ports of call. It’s kind of a vacation within a vacation as the scenery and daily activities change based on the port. With plenty of dining options, onshore activities, and onboard entertainment you can get the most out of your honeymoon.
Vacation packages are also an excellent option for honeymooners. You can choose to stay at an all-inclusive resort, or skip the meal plans and enjoy the surrounding area. An all-inclusive resort is ideal for those who want to relax without thinking about daily expenses. These resorts include meals, snacks, and beverages so you can enjoy your day without constantly handing over your credit card.
During your honeymoon, make sure you get out and explore outside of the resort area. Don’t forget to research prior to your vacation and pick a couple of places you would like to see. If you find yourself at the hotel wondering what to do next, check with the concierge. They are incredibly knowledgeable and can be a great resource.
4. Prepare Your Travel Documents
Before finalizing your vacation plans, be sure to look over your travel documents. Most countries require that your passport be valid for six months after your return. If you have a passport that is close to expiring, it would be wise to renew it before your trip. Check the name that appears on your travel documents. When booking travel, you will need to use your legal name as it appears on those documents. Hold off on making reservations under your married name until you've received your new passport or driver’s license.
5. Research Possible Honeymoon Amenities
Occasionally, resorts will offer complimentary items or gifts to honeymooners. To receive these, guests will need to show a copy of their marriage certificate. Be sure to pack a photocopy of your wedding certificate so if asked, you can enjoy these additional offers.

6. Research Activities
If there is a particular activity, tour or dining experience you would like to enjoy while on your honeymoon, be sure to make reservations in advance. It's not uncommon for these types of events to book up, and the last thing you want is to miss out on something you've been looking forward to experiencing together. That being said, it's your honeymoon so make sure you don't overbook your experience, this is about relaxing and having fun, not looking at your watch to make sure you make your next appointment.
Regardless of where you go or what you do on your trip, it's all about celebrating your nuptials so enjoy yourselves and have a great time!
