Puerto Rico: No Passport Required
For the longest time, many travelers have concluded that Puerto Rico was simply a cruise port-of-call with great shopping. Big mistake. Puerto Rico is SO much more. It is a destination that is full of culture, rich in history and brimming natural surroundings. One other misconception is that U.S. citizens are required to have a passport to visit this magical place. Guess what? No passport is required to visit Puerto Rico if you are a U.S. citizen!
Here are some fun experiences once you embark on your Puerto Rico getaway.
With soft white sand and Caribbean turquoise-blue waters, La Playuela Beach is worth the drive.
Beaches
With over 270 miles of coastline and nearly 300 beaches to choose from, Puerto Rico - Opens a dialog is sheer heaven for surfers, divers, snorkelers and paddle boarders. Rincon is one of the more popular spots for watersport offerings and its beaches of María, Sandy, Tres Palmas, and Domes are where both novice and experienced surfers will have the thrill of their lives.
Small waterfalls can be found in many places in the beautiful El Yunque rainforest.
Adventure
Puerto Rico’s El Yunque Rainforest is the only tropical rainforest in the United States. While you’re visiting, you can experience some of its “must-see” offerings, including a visit to Yokahú Observation Tower which offers impressive views of the ocean in the distance along with its lush green mountains. You can get your adrenaline pumping with the zip line attraction, or enjoy an ATV or horseback ride through El Yunque’s foothills.
Aquatic enthusiasts will appreciate the bioluminescent bays of Puerto Rico. As you kayak or swim, you will stimulate the high concentration of dinoflagellates which will produce a beautiful neon blue-green glow-in-the-dark effect. There are only five ecosystems in the world where you can experience such amazing bioluminescent bays and three of them, Laguna Grande, Mosquito Bay and La Parguera are here in Puerto Rico.

Located on Fortaleza Street in San Juan, the umbrellas are a colorful attraction.
Arts & Culture
The traditions and art offerings of Puerto Rico are of particular distinction in the Caribbean. Countless festivals, celebrations and events keep this U.S. territory vibrant and lively. While many of these events occur in the city center of San Juan, you will find others taking place throughout its municipalities. From the Festival Nacional Indígena (which celebrates Puerto Rico's indigenous Taino roots), to the Festival de la Piña Paradisíaca which celebrates all things pineapple, to the Carnaval Ponceño which is a weeklong celebration leading up to the beginning of Lent.
The city of Ponce is home to the Museo de Arte de Ponce, replete with works of arts originating from the Americas and Europe which live alongside the works of local art works that are inspired by African, Taino and Spanish influences. San Juan’s Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico is a historic gem featuring works of art dating from the 17th and 18th centuries.
Culinary
During your visit to Puerto Rico, you’ll quickly learn that food is very much tied to its heritage. Indigenous Taino, African and Spanish influences are all embedded within the tapestry of its cuisine. Staples include peas, beans, carrots, onions and plantains, as well as herbs such as marjoram, cilantro and Caribbean thyme. Pork is a main ingredient of many Puerto Rican delicacies. Dishes such as arroz con gandules y lechon (rice with peas and pork), mofongo (fried plantain and cassava combined with fried pork, garlic and olive oil) and tripleta (sandwich filled with ham, chicken, steak and sofrito) are all very delicious and distinctive to Puerto Rico.
One additional thing to note. The Pina Colada was born in Puerto Rico. However, there are other countries that try (unsuccessfully) to claim it as their own beverage. One thing’s for sure, Puerto Rico does this popular and tasty beverage right! Blended with coconut cream, fresh pineapple juice, local rum and ice, Pina Coladas seem to taste far better in Puerto Rico than any other place due to the supremacy of the ingredients.
